Khamia Powell is an artist whose work blooms at the intersection of teaching, community-based research, and advocacy. Like flowers pushing through concrete, Khamia’s art celebrates the resilience, beauty, and voices of those too often marginalized, underestimated, and overlooked.
As a teacher and researcher (Ph.D.), Khamia has spent years elevating the inherent genius, talents, hopes, and dreams within underserved communities—amplifying voices that have been historically and persistently silenced. Her teaching, research, and advocacy examine power, identity, and representation, ensuring that those who have been pushed aside are ultimately seen, heard, and valued.
This ethos is the foundation of Elevating Voices, LLC. —a platform that transforms art and research into a vehicle for storytelling, justice, and empowerment. Through bold imagery and expressive works, Khamia cultivates spaces where squandered dreams take root, hidden beauty flourishes, and the voices of the unheard are liberated.

“Flowers Amidst Concrete.”
This collection explores the interplay of texture, depth, and perception through impasto mixed media techniques. Sculpted layers create a tactile, dimensional surface, while acrylic paint adds depth and movement. Each piece is handpainted to appear as stone. Embracing a loosely abstract style, these works reveal themselves gradually—what is seen at first glance may shift upon deeper engagement. Shapes and forms emerge subtly, inviting the viewer to contemplate what lies beneath the surface, both physically and metaphorically. This collection encourages an intimate dialogue between art and its observer- evoking curiosity and contemplation about the unseen and the imagined in ourselves, in each other, and in the world.
